The Driftwood theory

50 × 70 × 12 cm, print on acrylic, frost glass, programmed led lights, 2019

Risto Ryti served as President of Finland throughout the Continuation War 1941–1944. The post-war historiography created the “driftwood theory”, ie Finland's drift into the war of aggression against the Soviet Union as a German partner without its own intention. The theory was later overturned. Every time period writes one’s own truth and every decision is based on imperfect knowledge. This work is an illustration of Ryti in the midst of the fog of war.
